Polycraft Announced as Launch Title on Google’s Next-Generation Chrome Store
Wonderstruck are excited to announce that Polycraft — a 3D action tower defence game — is now available as one of the first Chrome Packaged Apps, a brand new way to sell and deliver games from Google.
Developed by ex-Lionhead veterans, Polycraft is one of the first games to be offered as a download through the Chrome Web Store. On this new service games can be downloaded as an app, in a similar way to how users get games through services like Steam or Origin.
Polycraft is a 3D, character driven, tower defense game that combines action and strategy in an ambitious new way. Polycraft is developed by ex-Lionhead veterans behind Black and White 2 and Fable 2. Unlike the standard tower defense formula, players of Polycraft control their character, directly engaging in exciting combat with the ability to craft a persistent and ever-growing island stronghold.
What is a Chrome Packaged App?
Chrome Packaged App games can now be downloaded just like any other game you may be familiar with (from services like Steam or Origin), but are powered by flexible web technologies such as HTML5 and WebGL (for advanced 3D graphics). In this case, it allows you to download Polycraft, where it was previously only available to be played in a browser (such as Chrome or Firefox).
Why is this cool?
Web games are great, but they require an internet connection and have to live inside a browser tab, meaning they often don’t get as much screen space and can be easily closed or forgotten about. Native apps don’t require an internet connection, there’s no unnecessary browser interfaces and they live inside their own dedicated window (or even take over the full screen).
Polycraft’s Chrome App (download) offers a number of benefits over playing in the browser: offline play, faster load times, more screen space for the game, instant sign in using a Google account, purchases using Google Wallet and quick access with the Chrome App Launcher.
To coincide with the launch of Chrome Packaged Apps, Polycraft is being featured by Google in the updated Chrome Web Store as an example of what’s possible when web technologies and the desktop apps make friends!
“We’re starting to see the line between web and native games blur. We used flexible web technologies to develop Polycraft, and now we’re able to deliver it as a download. This is a huge opportunity for indies and big studios — we’re thrilled to be in on day-one.”
Ben Furneaux, Developer at Wonderstruck

Polycraft wouldn’t be possible without the next-generation HTML5 web technologies behind it. Powered by the Turbulenz open-source HTML5 game engine, Polycraft is one of the first online games to use advanced web technologies (such as WebGL) beyond tech demos to create epic battles, 3D character driven combat, persistent progression and beautiful, immersive worlds.
